During today's 4th of July street games, Nome Rotary President Danielle Slingsby announced the Little Sisters of Jesus as Nome's citizen of the year.

The Little Sisters of Nome and Little Diomede have worked with us, lived with us and kept up with us almost all their lives and have showed us the way to live with dignity and grace every minute of the time. They have led exemplary lives in demonstrating their humility and the purpose we each have in living to the best of our ability.  In their quiet way, they have shown that it doesn’t take great wealth, or even great effort to live a good life in Nome.

Congratulations!

This years swim was an amazing success!   Dawyn made some killer oatmeal cookies. Erin was probably the most photographed bear in Alaska today.  Grill master Dennis cooked up yummy reindeer dogs that sold out fast! Sarah was the t-shirt and towel selling guru and we sold them out tool!  Charlie and Tom put on a great show with the fire.  And if you were paying attention, you could even see whales breaching out in the ocean.   Thanks to everyone who helped- Sandra, Leo, Danielle, Jenna, Scott, Spruce and anyone else I may have missed. Most of all,  I think we all enjoyed the sunshine.

Nome Rotary Club President Adam R. Lust and spouse Gracy recently returned from the Philippines. Adam reports that one highlight of the trip was taking part in a one day medical mission to assist 49 indigenous families. The event was organized by the Rotary Club of Central TandagSurigao Del Sur. Each family member was seen by a doctor and given necessary medicine. Additionally, each family received clothing items provided by the Metro Manila Rotary Club and an array of food and hygiene items provided by the Nome Rotary Club.  ImageImageImage

By Lew Tobin: First there was the Mini Mukluk Marathon on last Saturday, then the Iditarod ended; then Joann Potts came in and gave us her version of the end of this year’s last great race, over lunch at the firehall Wednesday.  Lunch was a homemade meal to support two Volleyballer’s going to a Hawaii clinic this spring.

And Thursday we cooked Reindeer Dogs in the snow (actually we used our charcoal grill in the snow).  Most of the time the line for our dogs was longer than the one watching the burled arches of the bigger dog race.  Our dogs were coming into a finish at a much quicker pace than the Iditarod dogs however.  In the three hours we were cooking 6 mushers brought dogs in under the arches. We served 100’s (or so it seemed).

Enjoy the rest of the Iditarod.

By Lew Tobin: It was a little windy (25 knots out of the north) and chilly (about 0 degrees), but we had nice a walk/ run just the same.  We sold 54 t-shirts and had 41 finishers.  First runners were across the finish about 15-18 minutes after the start and everyone was done after 70 minutes.  A few red faces in the group but almost everyone was well dressed.  Thank you to all who helped make this another flawless run.  Jenna, David, Bruce, Erin, and Tom all pitched in to sell shirts, time the race and turn the people around in the middle of the race.  -ImageImage
